Karen Ross is one of those truly special members. She has been a dedicated subscriber from the very beginning of Relax n Craft. It has been an absolute joy to see her journey unfold. She is a skilled jewellery maker. She also runs Happy Owl Crafts, a charming yarn shop in Glasgow. There, she brings her love of crafting to others.

Whether sheโs working with macrame, wire wrapping, or chain maille, her creativity shines through in every piece she makes. I was thrilled when Karen agreed to share her jewellery-making journey. Iโm so excited to share her story with you. Here, in her own words, is Karenโs experience with jewellery making and Relax n Craft.
My Journey with Jewellery and Craft
Iโve been a Relax n Craft subscriber since the very beginning, and it has been an amazing journey! My name is Karen Ross, and Iโm the owner of Happy Owl Crafts, a lovely yarn shop in Glasgow. Iโve always loved crafting, and jewellery making has been a passion of mine for many years. I was thrilled when Fleur asked me to share about my journey, so here it is!
How It All Began
I first learned to macrame as a teenager using jute, making necklaces and bracelets. Later, while working at Camp America in my twenties, I discovered jewellery making. It was a great way to pass the time during my downtime. That early introduction planted the seed for what has become a lifelong passion.
Experimenting with Different Techniques
Iโve been crafting since childhood. I have always loved trying out new things. Macrame bracelets truly hooked me. From there, I began experimenting with different mediums. Iโve been making jewellery in some form or another for over 20 years.
From Hobby to Selling Creations
For the most part, Iโve made jewellery as a hobby. Over the last couple of years, I discovered chain maille and wire wrapping. Since then, Iโve started selling my pieces. Itโs been exciting to see my work appreciated by others.
Learning Through Relax n Craft
Through Relax n Craft, Iโve learned so many wonderful techniques, and Iโve loved them all! My favourites so far have been pearl knotting, malas, and new chain maille designs. The comprehensive tutorials have been invaluable. Live Q&A sessions offer support. The Relax n Craft Facebook group has helped me develop my skills.
Exploring New Gemstones
I enjoy using gemstones in my jewellery. Relax n Craft has introduced me to stones I wouldnโt have typically chosen. I gravitate towards fluorite and amethyst. I let the shapes of the gemstones influence which medium I use. It is macrame, wire wrapping, or chain maille.
Memorable Projects
The Gaiaโs Gift and Guru Bead Bracelet are from the September 2022 box. These are some of my most memorable projects from Relax n Craft kits. I cherish these projects. This was a peaceful and fulfilling project for me. I also adored the Destiny of Thetis Pearl Bracelet from March 2023 because of my love for pearls. Initially, I thought pearl knotting would be too difficult, but I proved myself wrong! Another standout was the crochet jewellery from the October 2024 boxโespecially fitting since crochet is another of my passions.
The Joy of Subscription Boxes and Looking Ahead
One of my favourite parts of receiving my Relax n Craft subscription box each month is the simple joy. I love opening all the little bags. Itโs like giving myself a special gift every month, filled with new techniques and materials to explore. Looking ahead, Iโm eager to deepen my understanding of chain maille. I am especially interested in the ratios. I want to know why certain weaves work better for specific designs. I always love learning more and expanding my skills.

Relax n Craft stands out to me because of the quality of the tutorials. It also stands out because of the wonderful sense of community and support. Expert guidance makes all the difference. Being capable of asking questions is invaluable. The high-quality, genuine semi-precious gemstones in each box add significant value. Iโm so grateful to be part of this amazing crafting family.
