Before we dive into Jill’s story, I want to take a moment to celebrate her. Jill is a wonderful lady. She is also an incredibly talented jewellery maker. Her creativity and passion inspire everyone in the Relax n Craft community. Her journey is a true testament to the power of perseverance, artistry, and the joy of crafting.
How did you first get into jewellery making?
I grew up in North Yorkshire, surrounded by opportunities to be creative. My parents were geologists. From a very young age, my dad took me fossil hunting along the North Yorkshire coast. This sparked my love for rocks, fossils, and gemstones. Over the years, I inherited my dad’s collection, which eventually inspired me to start creating wearable gemstone jewellery. The idea of turning beautiful, natural elements into something personal and artistic felt like the perfect outlet for my creativity.
What sparked your interest in jewellery making, and how long have you been making jewellery?
My fascination with gemstones and geological formations was ignited during a family trip to America when I was 11. We visited iconic landmarks like Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Monument Valley. These experiences deepened my love for the natural world. Years later, my interest turned toward jewellery making when I discovered precious metal clay (PMC) while living in the UK. This led to a diploma in PMC and a passion for creating unique pieces. I’ve now been making jewellery for over 12 years, although my journey has included breaks due to life’s challenges.
Have you made jewellery as a hobby, or do you also sell your pieces
Jewellery making began as a hobby but quickly grew into something more. While living in Canada, I sold my creations at events, festivals, and markets under the name JillypopSilver. Now, due to health constraints, I mostly create for the joy of it. Yet, I still dream of finding a proper outlet to share my work with a wider audience. My hobby became a profession. My passion for creating has always been at the heart of it.
What has been your favourite technique you’ve learned through Relax n Craft so far?
Chain maille has become my absolute favourite technique, and I credit that entirely to Relax n Craft (RnC). It was a style I always admired but felt too intimidated to try. RnC made it approachable, providing clear tutorials and kits with the right materials. While I’ve worked through many chain maille projects, Whispers of Iris (June 2022) stands out as a personal favourite. It reignited my love for jewellery making and gave me the confidence to tackle intricate designs.
How has Relax n Craft helped you develop new skills or techniques?
Relax n Craft has introduced me to countless new techniques. I would have never attempted many of these on my own. From pearl knotting to needle-and-thread work, the subscription boxes challenge me to step out of my comfort zone. Even when a technique is revisited, the projects are designed with fresh twists that guarantee I’m always learning something new. The in-depth tutorials have been invaluable in building my confidence and expanding my skillset.
Have you used gemstones in your jewellery that you wouldn’t typically choose? Which ones, and how did they influence your designs?
Absolutely! The RnC boxes have introduced me to gemstones like howlite, mookaite, and unakite, which aren’t my usual picks. While I’m not naturally drawn to them, the curated designs and combinations in the boxes always surprise me. They push me to think differently about colour and texture, leading to pieces that exceed my expectations. A fluorite flower necklace from an early RnC box sparked my imagination. It encouraged me to explore designs outside my comfort zone.
Can you share any memorable projects you’ve worked on using the Relax n Craft kits?
There are so many memorable projects! One highlight was a dragonscale chain maille piece. I made it in sterling silver—a true labour of love. It took over 20 hours. It’s one of my proudest creations. Another standout was the Jewels of Nike wire technique box (August 2023), which inspired me to create multiple pieces. More recently, I’ve enjoyed the Tenebris Falls crochet box (October 2024). I have also enjoyed Charm of Charis, a coiling box by Katie Parker (May 2023). Each kit offers something unique and challenges me in new ways.
What do you enjoy most about receiving your Relax n Craft subscription box each month?
Receiving the RnC box feels like opening a gift to myself every month. I love seeing the gemstones in person and imagining the possibilities they hold. The detailed tutorials help me plan and prepare. By the time I start creating, I’m fully immersed in the process. Beyond the materials, the subscription has given me access to an amazing community. They are supportive and like-minded individuals who share my passion for jewellery making.
What would you like to learn in the future or explore further in jewellery making?
I’d love to revisit silversmithing techniques, as it’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to practice. Dichroic glasswork is another area I’d like to explore further, along with stained glass projects, which have always fascinated me. About jewellery-specific skills, I’m eager to dive into more complex wire work. I also want to expand my repertoire of chain maille designs. The possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to keep learning and growing.
How do you think Relax n Craft stands out in supporting your jewellery-making journey?
Relax n Craft stands out because it’s so much more than a subscription box. It’s a comprehensive learning experience. It has helped me develop skills I never thought I’d master. These include pearl knotting and gemstone selection. The high-quality materials, detailed tutorials, and collaborative community have been instrumental in my growth as a jewellery maker. Fleur’s expertise and willingness to share her knowledge make RnC truly special. It’s a source of inspiration, confidence, and connection, and I’m so grateful to be part of it.
