First things first!
One of the most exciting aspects of curating each Relax n Craft subscription box is deciding which jewellery medium to feature. With so many fascinating techniques to explore, I aim to keep each month’s box fresh and exciting by introducing a variety of skills and methods.
I make it a rule to use a particular jewellery technique only twice a year. This ensures that no two boxes feel the same and keeps things interesting for our subscribers. Whether it’s beaded crochet, chain maille, macrame or wire-wrapping, I carefully plan each box to offer something completely different, helping our subscribers learn and grow as crafters.
The goal is to bring new skills to the table, so each box is designed to teach something unique. From exploring intricate beading patterns to experimenting with gemstones and metal, each month is a new journey in jewellery making. By offering a wide range of techniques, I hope to inspire creativity and build confidence in our subscribers, one project at a time.
What is next?
Once I’ve chosen the jewellery medium for each Relax n Craft box, the next step is just as important—selecting the right tools to go with it. While our subscribers only need a basic tool kit for all our projects, I take extra care to identify any specific tools that are essential for the technique being featured that month.
Each box comes with all the tools needed to make the crafting experience seamless. I’m meticulous in choosing the highest quality tools that are not only fit for the job but also easy to use, making sure that they’re perfectly suited for both beginners and more experienced crafters. Whether it’s precision pliers for wirework or specialty needles for bead crochet, every tool in your box is chosen with care.
Next is the fun bit!
When curating gemstones for Relax n Craft, I take great care in sourcing them from only my most trusted suppliers, who specialise in top-quality gemstones. I begin by selecting a stunning colour palette that sets the tone for the month’s project, then carefully choose the perfect gemstone, paying close attention to its shape and cut. These elements are crucial in ensuring that the design works harmoniously and results in showstopping pieces. Whether you’re a first-time jewellery maker or a seasoned crafter, these gemstones help you create beautiful, professional-quality jewellery. For any gemstones I’m unsure about, I rely on a world-renowned gemmologist to verify their authenticity and quality, ensuring the very best materials for each kit.
Lastly its now a case of curating everything else to make this box a cohesive collection
This part can take the longest! I now have too look at any cords, thread, wires and findings that are needed to make the beautiful gemstones into beautiful jewellery.
There is more to this than meets the eye, in the United Kingdom we have certain laws and regulations for what metals we can use in jewellery to avoid allergies and health issues.
When crafting jewellery in the UK, it’s crucial to understand the laws governing nickel, cadmium, and lead due to the health risks they pose. These metals can cause allergic reactions and serious health issues if not properly regulated, so jewellers must ensure their products comply with legal standards.
Nickel Regulations
Nickel is a common allergen, and UK law limits the amount of nickel released by jewellery. Items that come into direct contact with the skin cannot release more than 0.5 µg/cm² per week, and for piercings, the limit is even stricter at 0.2 µg/cm². Cadmium and Lead Restrictions
Cadmium, a toxic metal, is restricted to no more than 0.01% by weight in jewellery. Similarly, lead is limited to 0.05% due to its health risks, particularly for children.
These laws apply to all types of jewellery and jewellery making componants, and non-compliance can lead to significant penalties, including fines or recalls.
And now for the best part!
This for me is the icing on the cake! putting everything together into the beautiful packaging. With every Relax n Craft box I make sure that all the packaging can be reused and repurposed. Everything will come in grip seal bags to help keep everything organised and away from things that can tarnish metal etc, these are then placed into beautiful organza bags that you can gift or store your finished pieces in.
Oh wait I forgot something!!
Every box has something else in it! Some would say the bet part 😂 I forgot the Tea and Biscuits the Relax part of every box. I choose only the best quality biscuits and tea and of course I have sampled each flavour (well I have to make sure that they are lovely don’t I lol)
